The pandemic developments are shaking up the regatta calendar in Europe. Many sailing regattas have already been completely canceled. And there is still no end in sight: the regatta world is in postponement or cancellation mode "thanks" to Corona.
Now it also hits the May Offshore Regatta (MaiOR; originally planned: April 30 to May 2) for the thick ships. "We didn't take the decisions lightly and looked for alternative dates, but the new hard lockdown until April 18 put the icing on our decision," said Dirk Ramhorst, organization manager of the Kiel Yacht Club regattas.
"As with the postponement of Kiel Week to September, we have been met with a lot of understanding for this decision," added Sven Christensen, Point of Sailing. The partners, class associations and active sailors have been informed and support the decision.
Although Kiel Week 2020 showed that the Kiel organizers can handle the pandemic, "we have the hygiene concept of the previous year in our pocket and can use it for any sailing event," says Ramhorst, but this is not the right sign now.
For the MaiOR regattas of seagoing yachts (ORC, J/70 and J/80), there was also no chance for the scheduled date or an alternate date. By extending the lockdown to April 18, all attempts to maintain the offer for the first thick ship regatta in Germany were overturned. "We had hoped for a different development. But with a lockdown until two weeks before the first start on May 1, there is no planning certainty for a sailing event," said Eckart Reinke, Head of the Offshore racing at the KYC, explaining the decision. In order to give the owners and active sailors planning security for their season, the decision was made shortly after the political decision.
As organizer of large Regatten the Kieler Yacht-Club takes responsibility and supports the measures of the Federal Government for the containment of the virus spread. All participants who have already transferred the entry fee will of course receive a refund. Please fill out the form attached here and send it to the mail address email@example.com. The processing may take some time.
We ask for your patience and understanding!
